Hogarth Riverview Manor (HRM) is a new, 96-bed, single-storey, long-term care home built and operated by St. Joseph’s Care Group (SJCG) on the Hogarth Westmount site in Thunder Bay.
The home resulted from an award of long-term care beds from the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care in April 1999. Construction began in September 2002, with occupancy on February 15, 2004. The total cost of the project was $14.4M, and the total square footage is 64,625.
The home supports a full range of programs and services, providing care to elderly physically-disabled adults, those afflicted with Alzheimer’s and dementia, as well as the frail with high-intensity medical needs.
Each resident is offered a place to call his/her own and a warm home environment where people share and care. We believe that each person’s individuality must be respected, and therefore, decisions about the resident’s daily life will be made with him/her, not for him/her.
It is our belief that independence is a desirable human quality that fosters a sense of well-being. For this reason, each resident will be encouraged and helped to attain the highest level of independence and self-care that is possible for him/her to achieve.
We believe that a function of our nursing home is to so improve the physical and mental health of the residents, that some of them will be able to return to their homes.
Our philosophy of care recognizes the value of a cooperative group effort by members of various disciplines. Families, friends and volunteer from the community are considered integral members of our Health Team.

The personal growth and satisfaction of staff members, through their work, is fundamental to our beliefs. We consider that the provision of a comprehensive orientation program, continuing education and recognition for individual and group efforts help to promote satisfaction. We believe that each member of our staff contributes through knowledge, skills, experience and personal attributes to the quality of care provided at Hogarth Riverview Manor.
Residents live in four Resident Home Areas, which promote a comfortable, familiar and home-like environment through building design, finishes and colours.
Four Resident Home Areas:
- Specialized Alzheimer's and Dementia
- Frail Elderly
- Higher-Intensity Medical Needs
- General Long Term Care
Each Resident Home Area is home to a maximum of 24 residents. Home design is resident-centered, reflecting St. Joseph’s Care Group’s core values of dignity, privacy and individuality. Residents’ personal rooms and communal spaces will be spacious, home-like and designed to allow for privacy, as well as resident and staff safety.

The communal rooms and spaces are specifically designed to optimize flexibility, as the resident mix and resident needs change over time. Access to most resident day-to-day needs are within walking distance of residents’ rooms. Lounges in the Resident Home Areas are designed to accommodate quiet activities (e.g., reading, listening to music, watching television) and allow for relaxed social interaction among residents, families and visitors. Most activity/therapy programs will take place in designated spaces within the Resident Home Areas.

Outdoors |
Residents, families and visitors will have access to larger communal activity areas, both within the Resident Home Area and more central community spaces in the building to support a variety of special, large-group social functions. Amenities such as a main lobby/town square and café area, hair salon, gift shop, vending machines and chapel are accessible to residents and families and the community.
Administrative and home support spaces for environmental services (e.g., housekeeping, laundry, maintenance and receiving) are designed to maximize the efficiency of operations and provide support to any future on-site development.
The design of outdoor spaces surrounding the facility allow for safe enjoyment of the outdoors by residents, their families and community programs. The facility is designed to maximize the view of the outdoors from bedrooms, dining rooms and other activity areas wherever possible. Social, psychological and physical benefits to residents through the therapeutic use of indoor greenery and outdoor spaces will be maximized.
