Driver Assessment Program
The Driver Assessment Clinic assesses and trains individuals wanting to maintain their driving privileges, return to driving, or learn to drive.

Approach
- Assess physical and thinking skills such as strength, vision, memory, knowledge of rules of the road.
- On-the-road driving evaluation in the driving instructor’s vehicle. Vehicle has adaptive equipment
- Make recommendations about adaptive vehicle equipment and advise on where to purchase and have it installed
- Provide remedial driving lesions to improve driver skills
- Provide training with adaptive vehicle equipment
- Recommend a home program or therapy to improve physical or mental skills related to driving if appropriate
- Forward copies of driving evaluation reports to the referring physician and the client
- Consult with family, vendors, funding agencies, Ministry of Transportation, or others as specified by the client with written consent
- Provide assistance in locating other driver evaluation centers with a disability
- Provide advice about vehicle modification for passengers with a disability
Team Members
- A registered Occupational Therapist experienced in working with persons with a variety of disabilities and knowledge of adaptive vehicle equipment
- Certified driving instructors qualified in driver education
- Client
- Referring physician
- Vendor if required
Goals
- Assist clients to maintain independence in driving. Although every effort is made to assist individuals with their driving goal, some may not succeed due to the impairments from their medical condition
- Ease transportation to clients
Admission Criteria
General
Individuals with medical conditions that may effect their ability to drive, for example: Stroke, Arthritis, Amputation, Brain Injury, Spinal Cord Injury, Psychiatric Disorder, Multiple Sclerosis, and other conditions.
- Passengers with a disability requiring assistive devices or modifications to the vehicle
