Hospice/ Palliative Care
Hospice Palliative Care is defined as the active compassionate care of the chronically and terminally ill, primarily directed toward improving the quality of life at a time when the goal is not cure. The emphasis of hospice palliative care is on the control of pain and symptoms and meeting physical, emotional, spiritual, social and cultural needs. It is multi-disciplinary in its approach, its scope and extends to include grief and bereavement.
The terms hospice and palliative care are used synonymously.(Canadian Palliative Care Association 2002)

Mission
In accordance with the mission and philosophy of St. Joseph's Care Group, the Hospice Palliative Care Service’s Mission is to provide care with compassion and concern, based on the Judeo-Christian tradition for individuals and their families facing terminal illness. We will provide care which maximizes the quality of life by addressing physical, emotional, social and spiritual needs.
The term "family" is meant to address relatives and significant others as designated by the client.
