Preschool Speech & Language Services

This service is located on the main floor of the St. Joseph’s Hospital site, although much of the work with children is carried out in the day care setting. St. Joseph’s works together with other local children’s agencies as part of Preschool Communication Services. As a group, we offer speech and language services, including direct therapy, parent-directed therapy and group therapy, to children prior to their Senior Kindergarten year. One speech-language pathologist and one communication disorders assistant work within this.

Preschool speech and language is offered to children with delays and/or disorders in expressive and receptive language, phonology, articulation, voice and fluency. Early literacy is also a key component of the program.

To access this service, parents, caregivers and/or physicians are to contact the Thunder Bay District Health Unit, which is the central referral agency for preschoolers.

This outpatient service is offered Monday to Friday, with some extended hours.
