Who is this program for?
This is available to any of our First Nations clients with diabetes or prediabetes in Thunder Bay and outreach communities.
Why is this program needed?
The incidence of Diabetes in First Nations people is as high as 26% in some communities. In Northwestern Ontario there is a gene that increases the incidence of diabetes in the OjiCree population. There are increasing numbers of First Nations children developing diabetes. Diabetes in pregnancy is also an increasing issue that needs careful management. Culturally based programs are based on traditions and values of First Nations people.
What is it?
It is a culturally based program for those Aboriginal people with diabetes. A team of a nurse and dietitian provide this program of diabetes education and management of diabetes.
Where is it offered?
Outreach services are provided to Fort William Community, Whitesands, Lake Helen, Rocky Bay, and Pays Platt. In addition we provide services at our offices on Memorial Avenue as well as the Kateri Church, and Anishnawbe Mushkiki Health Access Center.
When is it offered?
Visits to communities are arranged several times a year. Office visits in Thunder Bay are available year round.
How is it offered?
Many of our sessions are individual with the nurse and dietitian, at other times sessions may be offered in groups.
