Walter Martin, M.A., Manager
BSC's core team consists of full time employees of St. Joseph's Care Group. Each has been selected on the basis of specific expertise, as well as general counselling skills. In addition to core team members, a variety of consulting experts from within the community serve to supplement EAP services.

Jennifer Alaksa, M.A.
Jennifer has eight years of experience as a Psychometrist. She provides individual and family counselling for children, adolescents and adults. In her role as a full time EAP counsellor, Jennifer is involved in treating emotional problems, substance abuse, anger, stress, parenting, relationship concerns and native issues. Her special interests include working with children and adults in areas of crisis intervention, stress management, child adjustment, parenting and marital problems.

Pierre Beaupre, I.C.A.D.C.
Pierre has worked in the human services field for twenty years and specifically in the field of addictions for the past twelve years. Pierre brings a varied work and educational background to his counselling practice. He is a graduate of Lakehead University and currently functions as an addictions counsellor at the Sister Margaret Smith Centre of St. Joseph's Care Group. His experience and interests lay in moderation and abstinence-based programs for persons with alcohol and/or drug problems. Pierre also has extensive experience counselling persons who are troubled by various family of origin issues, including adult-children of alcoholic/dysfunctional families.

Geri Cosgrove, M.S.W., C.S.W.
Geri possesses more than twenty years of experience working within social and health agencies. She has provided marital and individual counselling with the Behavioural Sciences Centre for the past ten years and has recently become a full time EAP counsellor with B.S.C. Her training at the Ontario Family Guidance program in Toronto has equipped her with additional expertise in marriage and family counselling. Geri's interests also include women's issues, mid life transitional issues, grief, elder, adult-children of alcoholics issues, and emotional and stress related problems. She travels to Dryden every three weeks to provide on-site counselling services for our clients in that area.

Fernando Dias, H.B.Com.
Fernando is a graduate of Lakehead University's Honours Commerce Program. His experience in banking and backround as a business owner give him a well rounded view of financial and credit counselling. After 20 years on both ends of the financial spectrum, Fernando's compassion is balanced by the street smarts of the real world.

Janice Heinicke
Janice is our (busy) departmental secretary. Her pleasant, calm demeanour greets all those who call B.S.C. for appointments, group registrations and general information. Her lengthy experience in the health care field is a definite asset for all of us. If we were all as organized and efficient as Janice......

Dave Howard, M.A.
Dave recently joined the BSC counselling team. He graduated from Lakehead University's Master's Degree program in psychology during 1974, and has been a resident of Thunder Bay since 1964. Dave was employed as a psychometrist at the Lakehead Psychiatric Hospital for 17 years and later functioned as Director of Educational Services for 11 years. He has held part time consulting positions at Thunder Bay Correctional Centre, Vocational Rehabilitation Services, and the Cumberland Counselling Centre. He has also volunteered with the Heart and Stroke Foundation, Bereaved Families of Ontario, Telecare, Thunder Bay Credit and Family Counselling Agency, Mended Hearts, and the John Howard Society. Dave's current responsibilities include the provision of counselling services in Kenora, Dryden, and Thunder Bay.

Ihor Kozyra, M.A.
With twenty-nine years of experience as a clinician, Ihor is the most experienced member of our full time counselling team. Ihor's experience also includes working as a school board psychometrist and university instructor. In addition to general counselling skills, he offers special expertise in workplace issues, stress, anger, career exploration, personal growth, education, and relationship concerns. Ihor is responsible for providing on-site EAP counselling services in Marathon, Manitouwadge and Terrace Bay once monthly, apart from his duties locally.

Paul Johnston, Ph.D., C. Psych.
Dr. Johnston is a registered clinical psychologist with more than 17 years experience in the mental health system in Thunder Bay. He is a full time hospital psychologist, as well as a clinical supervisor for hospital psychology staff and graduate students from Lakehead University. He is also a psychotherapy supervisor for psychiatric residents through the University of Toronto. Dr. Johnston has extensive knowledge of various psychological assessment tools, and is a consultant, educator and therapist to a diverse inpatient and outpatient population. He has considerable experience with a number of disorders spanning from depression to anxiety and difficulties of everyday life including the management of stress and personal relationships. He also has special interests in trauma resolution as well as human sexuality and sexual orientation issues. Dr. Johnston has taught courses at Lakehead University and additional classes in topics ranging from stress and anger management to conflict resolution, building assertiveness and emotion regulation.

Peter MacDonald, B.A., C.A.P.P.E.
Peter works as a member of the Spiritual Care team at St. Joseph's Care Group and has been a counselling consultant with B.S.C. for the past five years. He holds specialist standing in the Canadian Association for Pastoral Practice and Education, has earned a Bachelor's Degree in philosophy and psychology from the University of Waterloo and is currently completing his Master of Divinity degree via the University of Winnipeg. Peter's expertise has proven valuable to those EAP clients seeking help in relation to grief, crisis debriefing, spiritual and relationship problems.

Maureen Marttunen
Maureen has worked as a secretary and receptionist with B.S.C. since 1997, and has lengthy previous experience working in a health care setting. In addition to general reception and appointment scheduling, Maureen maintains EAP statistical records, arranges a variety of group presentations, and works closely with EAP Coordinators. We can count on Maureen to be pleasant and sensitive to our client's needs.

Kelly Paglaro, M.A.
Kelly has eight years experience as a Psychometrist, graduating in 1991 with a Master's Degree from Lakehead University. She has been employed since that time with the Behavioural Sciences Centre, working within employee assistance services. Her experience includes both individual and family counselling involving stress, grief, anxiety, adult-child and relationship issues. Kelly's interests include grief counselling, marital and stress related interventions.

Trevor Sullivan, M.A.
Trevor has been a member of the Behavioural Sciences Centre team for a little more than a year. He graduated from Lakehead University during 1999 with a Master of Arts degree in Clinical Psychology. Prior to working with the Behavioural Sciences Centre, Trevor was employed as a Psychometrist at the Lakehead Regional Family Centre. He provides individual and family counseling for adults, adolescents, and children. Trevor’s areas of interest include general clinical counseling, stress, anxiety disorders, relationship issues and child/teen adjustment problems.
