The Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act, 2005 (AODA), Ontario’s newest legislation, received Royal Assent in June 2005. The purpose of the legislation is to develop, implement and enforce standards in order to achieve accessibility for all Ontarians. Until the new standards under the AODA are introduced as regulations, the Ontarians with Disabilities Act, 2001 (ODA) remains in effect. One of the requirements of the Act is that all hospitals prepare an annual accessibility plan, with input from persons with disabilities, and that the plan be made public.
This is the fourth accessibility plan prepared by the Accessibility Advisory Committee of St. Joseph's Care Group. The plan describes the measures that St. Joseph's Care Group has taken in the past year and the measures that will be taken during the next year to identify, remove and prevent barriers to people with disabilities. Individuals with disabilities include those who live, work or use the facilities and services at St. Joseph's Care Group.

The Ontarians with Disabilities Act (ODA) establishes requirements for the public service and greater public sector for accessibility for people with disabilities. The provincial government recently introduced new legislation (Bill 118, Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA). This Act will include mandatory accessibility standards and will apply to both the public and private sector. The Bill set out long-term goals to create a barrier-free Ontario by 2005.
We all need to be aware of potential barriers for our clients, visitors and staff. If you have a concern about accessibility or identify a barrier, please contact a member of the SJCG Accessibility Advisory Work Group.
Remember, barriers can take many forms, including the physical surroundings, how we communicate, our use of technology and our policies and practices.

From the June edition of the TOUCH Newsletter:
Congratulations to the Auxiliary to St. Joseph's Care Group on their 110th Anniversary.
In 1895, eleven years after the establishment of St. Joseph's Hospital, the first hospital in our city, a dedicated group of women organized themselves as Hospital Aids. In 1951 the name of the group became the Auxiliary to St. Joseph's General Hospital. As the Hospital evolved into St. Joseph's Care Group in the 1990's, the Auxiliary followed suit. Throughout the years, the Auxiliary has played a significant role in St. Joseph's Mission, to provide compassionate and holistic care and services to the people of Northwestern Ontario.
Auxiliary members strive to bring comfort and hope to all who are in distress of mind or body, to help the aged, the ill, and the very young - with generosity, with discretion, and with gentleness.
St. Joseph's Care Group appreciates all the Auxiliary does for our clients.
