Current Research Activities

A multi-site, randomized, controlled trial of a mindfulness-based cognitive therapy intervention for treating depression in a traumatic brain injury population

We are working with co-investigators in Toronto and Ottawa to examine mindfulness-based cognitive therapy for individuals with traumatic brain injury. This randomized control trial is funded by the Ontario Neurotrauma Foundation.

An Evaluation of Screening Tools to Identify At-Risk Drivers

We are currently evaluating off-road tests that may be predictive of driving ability.

Café Scientifique: When You're Taking Care of Someone Else, Who Takes Care of You?: Supporting Seniors Caring For Seniors In Our Community

We will be holding a public discussion with community members and experts with regards to caregiving.

Driver Cessation: A Study of Driving Cessation and Subjective Well-Being: Predictors, Moderators, and Comprehensive Measures of Well-Being

This project examines four issues with respect to driving cessation. 1) group differences as a function of driving status, 2) prediction of driving cessation, 3) the utility of using comprehensive measure of subjective well-being to assess the impact of driving cessation, and 4) the identification of variables that moderate the relationship between driving cessation and subjective well-being.

Driver, Vehicle and Crash Comparisons between 15-passenger Vans, Cars, Buses, and Minivans

We initiated this study to better understand the characteristics of drivers involved in crashes involving 15-Passenger Vans by comparing them to drivers of crashes involving other passenger vehicles.

Examining the influences of psychotic symptoms on the activities of daily living of individuals with Alzheimer disease

We are completing a longitudinal examination of the association between changes in the frequency of psychotic symptoms and changes in dependence in activities of daily living.

Medications, drugs, and safe driving

Using the Fatality Analysis Reporting System (U.S.A. crash data from 1975 to present) we have examined the association between several medications (e.g. benzodiazepines, opioid analgesics) and drugs (e.g. cannabis, alcohol) that can impair and their role in crash responsibility.

National Collision Database

Using the National Collision Database (NCDB; Canadian motor vehicle collision data) we are examining trends and characteristics (e.g., age, gender, alcohol and drug use among fatally injured drivers) in Canadian motor vehicle collisions.

Older adults' acceptance of one-screen and three-screen driving simulators to assess driving capacity

In this study we are investigating older adults' acceptance of both one-screen and three-screen driving simulators to accurately assess their driving capabilities.

Positive and Negative Caregiver Appraisal and Caregiver Health Outcomes

The current study examined the role that positive appraisal (i.e., gain) and negative appraisal (i.e., burden) of caregiving can play in understanding caregivers' physical and mental health outcomes.

Safer Roads to Recovery: Assessing Readiness for Driving after Traumatic Brain Injury

Working with colleagues in Ottawa and Australia, this is a multi-site study to examine the driving experiences of individuals with traumatic brain injury in order to develop reliable and valid assessment procedures for readiness to return to driving.

The Effect of Passengers on Older Driver Safety

The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of passenger types on older driver safety, including how the type of unsafe driver action committed prior to a fatal crash varied by presence and type of passenger.

Tool to Investigate Caregiving Issues from the Perspective of Family Physicians

We developed a survey to examine caregiver issues from the perspective of family physicians.

Wesway, Inc.

We have partnered with Wesway (a local respite service) to examine program satisfaction, caregiver burden, and health status over time.
