15-item stigma questionnaire: A further study of its psychometric properties

We conducted a study to determine the psychometric properties of a questionnaire that we developed to explore the stigma associated with mental illness.

Aggressive Driving in Young Drivers

We developed two models that examine proxy measures of aggressive driving (speed differential; Aggressive Unsafe Driver Actions) in young drivers by occupancy rate.

Assertive Community Treatment Team project

Working in partnership with the assertive community treatment teams in Thunder Bay we completed a long-term project on client outcomes.

An Evaluation of Respite Services for Seniors in the District of Thunder Bay

Working with Wesway (a local respite service), we provided an evaluation of respite services for seniors within the district of Thunder Bay. The report was then provided to the Northwest Local Health Integration Network.

An initial exploration on the use of Montessori-Based Activities (MBA) on an inpatient dementia care unit

This was a joint project with Occupational Therapy students from McMaster University and SJCG staff where we demonstrated the benefits of MBA on engagement in comparison to regular activities for clients in the Dementia Care Program.

A multi-case report of acute renal failure in patients treated with Aggrenox®

Working with a pharmacist from SJCG, we examined the experience of three patients treated with Aggrenox.

A pilot study of a mindfulness-based cognitive therapy intervention for treating depression in a traumatic brain injury population

We worked with co-investigators in Ottawa to examine the use of mindfulness-based cognitive therapy for individuals with depression and traumatic brain injury. This study was funded by the Ontario Neurotrama Foundation.

Mental health services: Will 38 rehabilitation inpatient beds meet the needs?

In consultation with Janet Sillman, VP Mental Health and Addiction Services, we examined whether the proposed number of mental health beds at St. Joseph's Care Group will meet the need.

Northwestern Ontario Community Comprehensive Assessment Project

The objective of the CCAP was to identify the needs of consumers served by community mental health programs in Northwestern Ontario. Ultimately, the intent was to explore the match or fit between the level of care that consumers receive and the level of care that is required. The Health Systems Research and Consulting Unit (HSRCU) at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health developed the methodology for the project, and it has been utilized in several other regions in the province.

Observed, Estimated, and Projected Fatality Trends

Examine observed, estimated, and projected fatality trends in motor vehicles using the FARS data.

Respite Services for Seniors in the Districts of Thunder Bay, Kenora and Rainy River: An Evaluation of Two Pilot Projects

We completed an evaluation of respite services provided by Wesway, Inc. in the Districts of Thunder Bay, Kenora and Rainy River. This report was then presented to the Northwest Local Health Integration Network.

The Additive Effects of Alcohol and Benzodiazepines on Driving

We used data from the Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS) to demonstrate the relationship between the combination of alcohol and benzodiazepines and the risk of committing an unsafe driver action

We examined how mindfulness impacts driving for individuals with a traumatic brain injury.

The service needs of people with serious mental illness in northwestern Ontario

The assessment of client need, both met and unmet, is an integral part of the planning and implementation of mental health services and supports. Using a representative sample of clients with serious mental illness from northwestern Ontario's mental health services, we are examining predictors of both need and unmet clinical need.
